25/4/26 – There and Back

A car travels from A to B.

For the first third of the journey, it travelled at 30mph.

For the rest of the journey, it travelled at 40mph.

The return journey from B to A took exactly the same time.

If the car travelled at a constant speed for the whole of the return journey, how fast did it travel when returning?

Answer = 36 mph

Assume the car travelled 90 miles

30 miles at 30mph = 1 hour

60 miles at 40mph = 1.5 hours

Return = 90 miles in 2.5 hours = 36mph
