8/7/24 – Mastermind

Sandip is trying to crack a four-letter code. For each guess he is given a mark as below:
“x” means a right letter in the right position
“o” means a right letter in the wrong position
After four guesses he has enough information to crack the code. What is the code?

C  D  E  A  “OOX”

B  D  G  C  “O”

I  F  E  H  “OO”

I  A  G  H  “X”

CAFÉ. From clue 4 A must be the second letter (otherwise there would be more Xs in the previous lines as letters I, G and H are repeated). Clue 3 shows that F and E are in the answer. Clue 1 C must be first letter as D, E and A cannot be. So we now have C A _ _. From clue 2 B, D, G are not in the answer. Therefore, F and E are missing letters and E cannot be third (clue 1)
