What happens when a young woman gets a surprise IQ test for her birthday? Who does she meet on the day, and will nerves get the better of her? Mensa member Melanie Bell’s new play, An IQ Test for my Birthday, is an unusual twist on the experience of taking an IQ test and deals with themes of family, acceptance and pride.
The play is one of four showcasing talent from the Tower Theatre’s Writers’ Room. The plays, which come under the theme of ‘Home’, will run from 12-16 December at Tower Theatre in Stoke Newington, London.
Melanie says: “My play was inspired by seeing the supervised test gift vouchers on the Mensa online shop and wondering who would purchase one of those for someone else, and why! When the main character Callie arrives for her test, she meets a straightlaced journalist and a hardworking mum and her energetic daughter. All are here for the same thing, to pass the test for their own personal agendas.”
